Periodontal Disease

Periodontal Therapy

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection of the gums that surround your teeth. It is one of the most common reasons why adults lose their teeth. Gingivitis is a common and mild form of gum disease that causes irritation, redness and swelling of your gums.

During your visit to our practice, our staff will measure the space between your teeth and gums, this will determine if you have periodontal disease.

Plaque, a sticky form of bacteria which accumulates on your teeth, is the primary cause of gum disease. Through regular brushing, flossing, and dental checkups, you can prevent periodontal disease from occurring.

Scaling

Scaling is a common dental procedure for patients with gum disease. This is a type of dental cleaning that reaches below the gumline to remove plaque buildup. It involves thoroughly cleaning the plaque, toxins, and tartar from your teeth and root surfaces.

If additional treatment is required, we offer Arestin, an effective antibiotic treatment. After your scaling procedure, Arestin is placed in the infected pockets and released over time to kill bacteria and eliminate infection.
